NJCAA All-Region X Division III Recognizes TCC Student-Athletes for Selection to the First, Second, and Freshmen Teams After Inaugural Season
As the college basketball season concludes and March Madness approaches, Tidewater Community College completed its first inaugural season with student-athletes earning All-Region X Division III honors including first and second team selections.
Student-athletes from the College's basketball programs were recognized for their athletic performances and selected by other coaches in Region X Division III. The NJCAA Region X (Region 10) Division III represents a competitive, non-athletic scholarship division within the National Junior College Athletic Association, primarily featuring colleges in Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. The division includes five community colleges: Tidewater, Virginia Peninsula, Patrick and Henry, Camp, and Sandhills.
Guard Destin Love (#2) and forward Derrick Grant (#23) both earned All-Region X 2nd Team Division III Men's Basketball Team and All-Freshmen Region X Division III Men's Basketball Team.
TCC Athletic Director Chad Smith reflected on the recognition and the team's competitive efforts throughout the season.
"The season record doesn't represent what they've done in terms of competitive play. By being recognized by peers [in the division], it really shows their impact and speaks to their competitive ability."
Head Men's Coach Clint Wright said his players have shown notable work throughout the season.
"The hard work these players detailed in practice was noticed by our opponents. Of course, this recognition would not have been obtained without committed teammates."
Freshman Derrick Grant said he was proud of achieving All-Region recognition after putting in extensive dedication.
"This recognition means a lot since it is a sign of all my hard work throughout the preseason. I am most proud of my shooting performance this season since I shot 51.7% from the three-point in the conference."
Grant highlighted the importance of support from his teammates, coaches, and family.
"Being a leader means guiding the team toward success, lifting up the person next to me on and off the court, and treating everybody on the team the same regardless of the captain or leader status," he said. "I hope my success influences other student athletes by showing that there's no limit to your success except your work ethic."
Coach Wright emphasized that there were many others who were qualified for this honor, but Love and Grant were "the most consistent at making basketball plays" on the court. Love earned 333 total points, specifically 13.9 points per game and 20.2 points per 40 minutes.
"This recognition sets the tone for year one and indicates that with hard work and perseverance, anything is possible. My plan is to continue to create a proactive culture, focused on academic and athletic tasks," he added.
Coach Wright said this award sets the foundation for his players to reach their goal of attending a four-year institution to further their academic and athletic careers.
As the inaugural season ends, the athletic coaches are looking toward the future and are excited to continue building on this season.
"The off-season is where the next step starts, not next competitive play season. The plan is to enhance them mentally and physically through rigorous training," Coach Wright said.
TCC Stormbirds will start their competitive play season on November 1st.
